The Executive Team, Manny & Nancy Marcano
How It All Began...
Manny Marcano, President and CEO of EMA Design Automation, started EMA in 1989, when Manny was walking the floor of a trade show in California. "We had been thinking of some kind of change for a while," said Nancy Marcano, Manny's wife and now vice president of EMA. "He told me, 'That's it. I want to make my own company’... he's a born salesman, so I was confident."
Manny Marcano served in the Air Force from 1972 until 1980. While he served, Manny earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland, in 1980. When Manny left the Air Force, he and Nancy moved to Rochester, New York, so he could attend the Rochester Institute of Technology where he obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1982.
Manny soon realized he wanted to concentrate on selling engineering solutions, not designing them. Manny worked for a couple different VAR’s in Rochester before starting EM Associates (EMA) in 1989. During that time, Nancy Marcano was taking care of the Marcano children, assisting with their start-up business, and working toward obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the State University of New York Geneseo.
EMA started as a small company in the basement of their home. In 1995, the territory expanded, and the name changed from EM Associates to EMA Mid-Atlantic. At that time, EMA employed on average about 10 employees. Sales kept growing, and EMA was making a name for itself in the EDA marketplace.
EMA sold electronic design software made by Cadence Design Systems, Inc., based in San Jose, California, and had a sales territory in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic states. Sales grew gradually. In July 2002, Cadence asked EMA to take on thousands of its small and medium-size customers nationwide. It was a blockbuster deal, and the Marcano’s quickly set plans to hire more workers and move from EMA's space in their small farmhouse to office space of its own. The company is now based at 225 Tech Park Drive, Rochester, New York. There are now 100+ people employed by EMA. "What's next is we grow to service larger accounts," Marcano said, "and offer other product lines that go with our Cadence systems."

Free EMA App Links Components between Digi-Key and OrCAD Capture
Rochester, NY (September 26, 2012) – EMA Design Automation™ (ema-eda.com), one of the world’s largest Electronic Design Automation Value Added Resellers, today announced the release of EMA Part Link™, a Cadence® OrCAD® Capture app that connects parts on the schematic to the vast Digi-Key® database of immediately available components.
“Many of our customers experience difficulties generating complete and correct BOMS for ordering parts,” said Manny Marcano, president and CEO of EMA. “The problem is often as simple as having an incorrect part number that’s either not orderable or is for the incorrect part. We took some technology from our CIP product and created this free app to help OrCAD Capture users get complete and correct data for purchasable parts directly from Digi-Key.”
Part Link is a simple app that allows a designer to download part information directly into the part on the schematic. Common information needed, like manufacturer, manufacturer part number, distributor, and distributor part number, are all mapped by default. Part Link automatically selects fields for download based on the part’s properties, and even goes further by allowing users to download additional information into part properties that are created on the fly. This works with any field Digi-Key supplies for the part, like tolerance, packaging, operating temperature, and even pricing.
Most designs have multiple part instances, so Part Link allows users to apply this same downloaded part information to all identical parts. The user has complete control over this process by selecting which parts are identical and which are not. If some parts look
the same at the schematic level, but are actually different, like 1K ohm resistors with different power ratings, the user simply deselects those parts.
The ability to search the Digi-Key database from within the design desktop was originally developed in conjunction with Digi-Key Corporation and made available to OrCAD Capture CIS users through EMA’s Component Information Portal (CIP). The introduction of apps and the OrCAD Capture Marketplace in the OrCAD 16.5 release made it possible to provide this searching capability to all OrCAD Capture users.
“The Part Link app powered by Digi-Key will give OrCAD Capture users direct access to our online database of components,” said Randall Restle, Digi-Key Director, Applications Engineering. “This essentially puts Digi-Key’s search box directly in OrCAD for the convenience of our customers.”
Part Link is available now at no charge in the OrCAD Capture marketplace within OrCAD Capture, or visit orcadmarketplace.com and click on the Online Store tab. For more information, visit EMA at ema-eda.com or call 800-813-7494.
