When considering what simulation software is right for you some good questions to contemplate are, “can it help me accomplish my objectives and goals?” and “how well can the software help me test my design for failures and maximize my performance without increasing costs?" We may be biased, but our answer to those questions is…PSpice.

According to the AIS (American Institute of Stress), 43 percent of working adults suffer from stress. While stress in the workplace can’t always be avoided, there are a variety of coping techniques which work to minimize its effects—these range from deep breathing and massage therapies, to visual imagery and self-hypnosis. Unfortunately, these coping techniques will not help in addressing component stress.

While the SPICE (simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis) kernel is public domain source code and there are many variants out there, not all SPICE is created equal. While most SPICE software can simulate circuits efficiently, choosing a simulation software requires a bit more consideration. The more important question is "will this product fulfill my ultimate business goals?" Meaning, once you have your waveform and simulation, what else might you need to do with it? How well can you analyze the end result, make changes, etc.

Have you ever wanted to simulate a design with existing hardware? Sure you can create a stimulus of what you expect from the hardware then simulate in PSpice, but sometimes there’s no substitute to the real thing. Ideally what engineers want is a blend of virtual and physical prototyping—something possible in PSpice. Since many IoT innovators use inexpensive development boards to develop their idea, I thought it would be instructive to show how one can develop new hardware in OrCAD and PSpice, then integrate the simulation with real sensors driven by an Arduino board.
