PCB Part placement is a very important part of the design process as it will drive the success of the entire project. Part Placement effects everything from manufacturing to electrical performance. This episode of Whiteboard Wednesdays will go over how placement can be achieved with a few simple steps as well as how should part placement be decided and what factors need to be considered.

In our last Whiteboard Wednesday episode, Best Practices for PCB Part Placement Part 1, we reviewed the general guidelines for part placement, however there are a few other factors that need to be examined. This episode will continue the discussion on Component Placement.

This week’s Working with OrCAD video, Creating a New design, discusses the multiple ways to create a new design within OrCAD. It also reviews Cadence project manager and where to set up basic information to get started.

This week’s Working with OrCAD video, DRC, will discuss how OrCAD can help easily resolve DRCs in your design. The video will cover how view DRC counts, review, waive, or fix them and reports you can execute which provide a secondary set of checks.

This week’s Working with OrCAD video, Constraint Manager, discusses how the constraint manager constitutes the central focus point within OrCAD. This allows the designer to control the physicality of their design, making it the heart and soul of Cadence design products. In this video, you will learn how to leverage the constraint manager to create error-free designs, the four types of constraint sets, and net grouping within the system.

This week’s Working with OrCAD video, Cross Section, will discuss how OrCAD can help you review design specs and determine physical requirements (i.e. controlled impedance, high voltage nets, high amperage nets, etc.) which can help you work more efficiently with your manufacturer to come up with a cost-efficient stack up or build. The video will also cover two different ways to enter the stack up information into your design either by manually entering the information into the setup cross-section dialog or via the IPC2581 standard— these methods help ensure your designs are accurate and can be repeatedly produced correctly.

Whether you are a new user or current customer our new video series, Working with OrCAD, will walk you through the basics of designing a board within OrCAD PCB Editor from start to finish. We will build a board from start to finish—covering libraries, placement, post-processing, etc.—and include a segment on how our constraint manager can assist you in your design process.
